Sustainability

As the world has banded together in the fight to be more sustainable, DARC SIDE is committed to making ourselves as sustainable as possible. Unfortunately, many other teams do not have the resources or the desire to achieve these goals. However, we are not deterred by this and we will continue to pursue our own green initiatives. Our goals are as followed:

  • We try to produce as little waste as possible.
  • We donate our extra materials to the Scrap Exchange, a local business selling salvaged and donated materials for upcycling projects.
  • We emphasize recycling and working with recyclable materials.
  • We use CompostNow, a composting service that allows us to sustainably dispose of pizza boxes, paper towels, and food waste.
  • Other sustainable practices include:
    • Encouraging our team members to eliminate plastic water bottles
    • Working to make a DARC SIDE reusable water bottle
    • A new scouting system that is 100% zero waste
    • Reusing parts from previous seasons

We also encourage our fellow FRC teams to be sustainable as well. We know it is difficult for teams to transition, but we are here to help make it as easy as possible. That is why we have created a comprehensive guide to help give others some simple steps they can do to make a difference in the world. Our simple guide is below and will be put around competitions.

Fundraising Presentation

This past Friday, our Fundraising team embarked on a journey to BPL. After a treacherous encounter with parallel parking, the team of four made it to the facility in downtown Durham. Ella, Emily, Tate, and Bobby were welcomed in by Mr. Rossilli, the US President and Chief Commercial Officer of the organization. The group began to set up and immediately met with some trouble. For a group of STEM- oriented students, the last problem you expect to encounter is wifi trouble, but it was truly calm after the storm. The presentation was smooth sailing from there on out as the teams representatives informed the employees of BPL of our plans for the season. At the end, the team engaged in a short Q&A session, thoroughly impressing their audience. After a plethora of handshakes and hand sanitizer the team exited with excitement. The fab four returned back to school triumphantly!
